Isaiah 6:5–7 (ESV): 5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!” 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”
The Lord has a priority of dealing with the way we use our mouths. In this famous passage where Isaiah the prophet encounters the magnificent holiness of God, of all of the things that God could have dealt with in Isaiah’s life he chose to deal with Isaiah’s mouth. God understands that the way that we use our mouth can either destroy us or or usher us into the center of His will. Living in a culture where the world pays no attention to how destructive words can be as well as a culture in the church that treats the way that we use our mouth as a trivial matter, we find ourselves in a dire situation where the world is in a complete state of chaos. It’s time for the people of God to let the hot coals of Heaven cleanse our lips once again!
Proverbs 18:21- “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.”
Every day we have The Choice to either speak words from our flesh, from the enemy, or from the Spirit of God. As Spirit-filled believers we have no excuse for speaking things into our life that are not in agreement with God’s will. The Lord has given us the same power that raised Jesus from the dead so that we can speak what he says over every situation in our life. When the angel pressed the hot coal against Isaiah’s lips it represented that Isaiah needed his previous mouth to be totally done away with. God wants to burn up the old way of speaking and the old way of using our mouth.. He wants us to speak life and liberty in every circumstance, especially when we don’t feel like it. If we always speak from the way we feel rather than from the place of God’s will it can cause a sense of chaos to erupt into our life on a continual basis.
Proverbs 21:23- ”Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity.”
Many marriages have ended in destruction because of misuse of the power of the tongue. Many children have grown up to live lives outside of God’s will because their parents spoke things over them that were not of God. Many people have lost their jobs because they could not control their lips at work. Many churches have been damaged because the people grumbled and gossiped instead of seeking God’s will. Only when we learn to guard our mouth with God’s resurrection power can we enter into the life of peace that God desires for us.
James 3:8-10- “But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.”
We have been given the Holy Spirit so that we can learn how to speak in a new manner, we cannot do it without Him. As a matter of fact on the day of Pentecost he gave the disciples tongues of fire as a signal that our new birth in Jesus Christ should be marked by a new way of speaking. We we truly surrender our heart we are also surrendering our mouth, Jesus said “out of the abundant of the heart the mouth speaks.” The words that we use will affect the atmosphere that we live in and God wants us to foster an atmosphere of life and peace instead of toxicity and darkness. When we learn to speak in accordance with God’s will by the power of the Holy Spirit our lives will never be the same, may His coals cleanse our lips afresh today!
