Where is God When Things are Hard?

Pain has a way of making God feel far away. When life falls apart, when prayers go unanswered, when everything in you is crying out for relief but heaven seems silent, the question rises: Where is God in this? If He’s good, why does He allow it? If He’s near, why does it feel like He’s nowhere to be found? This isn’t a new crisis of faith. It’s the same question that has echoed through generations. David cried out, “My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” (Psalm 22:1). Job sat in the dust, stripped of everything, wrestling with God’s silence. Even Jesus felt the weight of it on the cross. If the Son of God Himself asked this question, you’re not wrong for asking it too. But feelings aren’t facts. Just because God feels distant doesn’t mean He is.

God is with You in the Fire

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego didn’t get a free pass out of the furnace. They got God in it with them. When Nebuchadnezzar threw them into the flames, expecting them to be consumed, he saw something no man could explain. God didn’t keep them from the fire, but He walked with them through it. And when they came out, they didn’t even smell like smoke. That’s what He does. He doesn’t always remove the hardship, but He makes sure it doesn’t destroy you. What was meant to break you will prove He’s been with you the entire time.

Daniel 3:25—“But I see four men unbound, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt, and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.”

God is Working Even When You Can’t See It.

John 11:4—“This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

Lazarus was sick, and Jesus waited. He didn’t rush to heal him. He didn’t prevent his death. Instead, He let things play out, even though it looked like failure. When Jesus finally arrived, Lazarus had been in the grave four days. To everyone watching, it was too late. But Jesus had a bigger plan. Sometimes, what looks like neglect is actually God setting the stage for something greater. Delays are not denials. The silence of God does not mean the absence of God. Just because you don’t see Him moving doesn’t mean He isn’t working behind the scenes.

God’s Presence is Greater Than Your Feelings

Feelings are real, but they’re not always right. Elijah had just seen fire fall from heaven, but when fear gripped him, he ran for his life. He collapsed under a broom tree, convinced God had abandoned him. But God wasn’t gone. He met Elijah, not with a thunderous display of power, but in a whisper. God was there all along. Elijah’s fear clouded his perception, but it didn’t change reality. The same is true for you. Just because you don’t feel God doesn’t mean He’s left. Just because you don’t hear Him doesn’t mean He isn’t speaking. Faith isn’t built on feelings. It’s built on trust in the One who never changes.

1 Kings 19:12—“And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.”

God Uses Pain to Strengthen You

James didn’t say to tolerate trials. He said to count them as joy. Not because suffering is enjoyable, but because it produces something valuable. James 1:2-4—“For you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” Gold is refined in fire. Muscles grow through resistance. Faith is no different. What the enemy wants to use to break you, God will use to build you. Pain isn’t pointless when it’s placed in the hands of God.

God has the Final Word

2 Corinthians 4:17—“For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.”

The cross looked like the end. The disciples thought it was over. But three days later, Jesus walked out of the grave, proving that suffering does not get the last word. Your suffering is temporary. The enemy doesn’t win. God isn’t finished. What feels like loss right now might be the setup for something greater. He never leaves things unfinished. So where is God when things are hard? Right there with you. In the fire. In the waiting. In the silence. In the pain. And when it’s all said and done, you’ll see—He never left. Hold on. Keep your faith. He’s closer than you think.
